MA Art History and Russian
About this course
Art History and Russian is a degree that brings together the systematic study of visual culture across periods and traditions with the language and culture of one of the world's most significant and distinctive artistic civilisations. Art History develops visual literacy and the analytical skills to engage with the history, context, style, and meaning of images and objects, exploring how visual culture has both reflected and shaped human history, politics, power, and identity. Russian opens access to a literary, musical, and visual tradition of extraordinary depth, from medieval icons and imperial portraiture through the revolutionary avant-garde to contemporary Russian art and culture. At the University of St Andrews, you will learn to analyse visual culture using different critical approaches and theoretical frameworks, understanding the complex role that art and its display play in questions of aesthetics, politics, and identity. The Russian component develops both linguistic competence and the deeper cultural knowledge needed to engage seriously with Russian civilisation, its particular artistic and intellectual traditions, and its place in European and world history. The degree runs over four years on a full-time basis and includes a year abroad, which for a modern languages degree is essential for developing the fluency and cultural understanding that the subject requires. Graduates with this combination are particularly well placed for roles that require both cultural and linguistic expertise: museum and gallery work, cultural diplomacy, journalism, area studies research, international organisations with Russian-speaking remits, and academic research in art history or Slavonic studies are all natural directions. Postgraduate study in art history, Russian studies, or European cultural history provides routes to further specialisation.
