About this course
Architecture is the art and science of designing the built environment, creating spaces and structures that are safe, beautiful, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of the people who inhabit them. It is a discipline that requires both technical rigour and creative vision, combining knowledge of structural engineering, materials, environmental systems, and building technology with the capacity for spatial thinking, aesthetic judgment, and an understanding of how design shapes human experience. Architects bear significant responsibilities toward both their clients and the wider public, and their work has a direct impact on the quality of life in cities, communities, and individual buildings. At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time degree develops your architectural knowledge and design capabilities in an environment that connects studio learning to the wider world through study trips across the UK and abroad, giving you direct experience of inspiring buildings and cities. You will develop skills in architectural design, drawing, modelling, and digital representation alongside your understanding of construction technology, environmental design, architectural history and theory, and the professional and regulatory contexts of architectural practice. The programme encourages you to engage with your local surroundings as a source of inspiration and a context for understanding how architecture relates to place, community, and history. You will develop your capacity to think spatially and critically, to move between different scales of design, and to communicate ideas through drawing, models, and presentations. Studio culture, with its emphasis on making and critical review, is central to your development as a designer. Graduates from the undergraduate stage of architectural education typically progress to postgraduate study, which is required for professional registration as an architect with the Architects Registration Board. The skills developed through an architecture degree also open paths in urban design, interior design, set design, project management, conservation, and the broader built environment professions.
