MArch Architecture
About this course
Architecture at postgraduate level is concerned with the deepest questions of how we design and inhabit the built environment: how buildings serve their users, how they relate to their communities and landscapes, and how they embody ethical commitments about sustainability, social justice, and the quality of human life. A Part 2 qualification represents the second stage of the professional pathway to chartered architect status, building on Part 1 foundations to develop a sophisticated, independent architectural position and the complex design and critical skills that professional practice demands. At Sheffield Hallam University, this part-time programme cultivates a sophisticated and progressive approach to architectural design over two years, centred on a set of priorities that include social and ethical architectural practice, user and community participation, environmental sustainability, ecological construction, and innovative models of practice. Design projects explore architecture as a complex, interdisciplinary, and dynamic ecology, taking seriously both the technical demands of building design and the broader social and environmental context in which architecture operates. You will graduate not only with a Part 2 qualification but with a rigorously developed and creatively explored position within the discipline, ready to progress towards architectural registration. Holding a Part 2 qualification is the second step on the pathway to becoming a Chartered Architect, with the Part 3 professional qualification the final stage before registration with the Architects Registration Board. Architects work across private practice, public sector, housing, education, infrastructure, heritage conservation, and the growing field of sustainable and low-carbon design. The critical and ethical commitments developed in this programme are particularly valuable in a profession increasingly focused on buildings' social and environmental impact.
