About this course

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and the spaces between them. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of creativity and technical precision, requiring you to think simultaneously about function, beauty, structural integrity, environmental performance and the human experience of inhabiting space. Architects shape the physical world in which people live and work, and the best architecture contributes to human wellbeing, cultural life and the vitality of communities. It is also, increasingly, a discipline that must respond to the urgent challenges of sustainability and climate change in the built environment. At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time degree provides the theoretical, technical and design skills you need to create spaces that are innovative, meaningful and sustainable. You will study architectural history and theory, design studio practice, structural and environmental design, construction technology, and the professional and regulatory context of architectural practice. Studio work is central to the degree: you will develop design projects from concept through to detailed resolution, learning to translate ideas into built proposals through drawing, modelling and digital tools. The programme teaches you to think critically about design decisions and to situate your work within broader cultural, social and environmental conversations. The degree typically leads to Part 1 of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architects Registration Board qualification, which is the first stage of the professional route to registration as an architect. Further study at Part 2 and Part 3 level is required for full registration. Graduates typically continue to architectural master's programmes at Part 2 level, moving eventually toward registration as architects. Graduates who choose not to pursue full qualification move into related fields including interior design, urban design, project management, heritage, and design consultancy.
