BSc Architectural Technology
About this course
Architectural technology is the discipline that bridges architectural design and the technical processes of construction. While architects develop the spatial and aesthetic vision of a building, architectural technologists are responsible for working out how that vision can actually be built, specifying materials and systems, producing technical drawings and documentation, coordinating with engineers and contractors, and ensuring that buildings meet regulatory requirements for structure, energy performance, fire safety and accessibility. It is a rigorously technical profession that requires both creative problem-solving and precise, detailed thinking. At the University of Huddersfield you will study architectural technology over three years of full-time study on a practice-led programme that introduces you to technical detailing and digital design from early in your studies. The course has been developed in close relationship with architecture, construction project management and quantity surveying, giving you a strong understanding of how different professional roles fit together within the construction industry. You will develop proficiency in digital design tools and building information modelling, alongside skills in technical documentation, regulatory compliance and construction technology. A sandwich year and integrated work placement provide extended professional experience, connecting your academic learning to live project environments and significantly strengthening your preparation for graduate employment. The typical tariff of 104 reflects a programme that is both technically demanding and professionally oriented. Graduates work in architectural practices, construction companies, specialist consultancies and public sector organisations including local authorities and housing associations. Many pursue registration as chartered architectural technologists through the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, which provides professional recognition within the construction and design sectors. Career roles span technical design, building information management, project coordination, sustainable design and client liaison. The profession offers a stable and rewarding career in an industry that is central to how the built environment is created, maintained and transformed.
