BSc Architectural Technology and Practice
About this course
Architectural technology and practice sits at the boundary of architecture and engineering, focused on the technical design, specification, and construction of buildings. While architects conceive buildings, architectural technologists are the specialists who understand in detail how those buildings actually work: how they are constructed, how they perform in terms of energy, acoustics, and structure, how materials behave over time, and how design intentions translate into buildable reality. It is a discipline that combines creative design capability with rigorous technical knowledge. At Derby this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a route into the discipline for students who need to build their design and technical foundations before progressing into the main degree. Direct entry into later stages is available for those with relevant qualifications or work experience. You will study building construction, design technology, environmental systems, project management, and the professional practice skills that architectural technologists need to operate in the construction industry. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all available, giving you substantial professional and international experience before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points. Graduates from architectural technology programmes work in architectural practices, structural engineering firms, quantity surveying companies, construction contractors, and local authority planning and building control departments. The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists provides the professional pathway for graduates who wish to achieve chartered status, which is the benchmark for senior practice in the field. The construction industry is one of the largest employers in the UK economy, and architectural technologists with strong technical and professional skills are consistently in demand across both residential and commercial sectors.
