BEng Architectural Engineering
About this course
Architectural engineering is a multidisciplinary field that sits at the boundary of civil and structural engineering on one side and architecture on the other. It is concerned with the design and construction of buildings and structures that are both technically sound and architecturally thoughtful: not just structurally safe, but also functional, aesthetically considered, and responsive to the social, economic, and environmental contexts in which they are built. Where civil engineering focuses primarily on structural and infrastructure solutions and architecture primarily on design and spatial experience, architectural engineering integrates both perspectives. At the University of Liverpool, this three-year full-time programme is jointly delivered by the School of Engineering and the School of Architecture, reflecting the genuine interdisciplinary character of the discipline. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you international experience that broadens your understanding of how buildings and infrastructure are designed and built in different cultural and regulatory contexts. You will study structural analysis, materials, geotechnics, and construction technology alongside architectural design theory, building systems, sustainability, and the social and economic dimensions of the built environment. The programme provides the solid technical grounding of a civil or structural engineering degree combined with a robust understanding of architectural and contextual considerations. You will develop skills in structural design, building services, construction management, architectural communication, and project coordination, alongside the analytical reasoning and professional awareness needed to work across the engineering and architectural professions. Graduates from architectural engineering programmes pursue careers in structural and civil engineering consultancies, architectural practices, project management, facilities management, and sustainable design. Many pursue professional qualifications through the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. Postgraduate study in structural engineering, architecture, or sustainable design is a natural next step.
