BSc Archaeology & Palaeoecology and Geography
About this course
Archaeology and Palaeoecology with Geography is a degree that examines the human past and its environments from complementary scientific perspectives. Archaeology investigates the material evidence of human activity, including artefacts, settlements, monuments and landscapes, to reconstruct how societies have adapted and developed across time. Palaeoecology extends that perspective to the natural environment, examining how past ecosystems and climates have changed and how those changes have influenced and been influenced by human populations. Geography adds a spatial and environmental dimension, giving you the analytical tools to understand both physical landscapes and the human patterns inscribed on them. At Queen's University Belfast this three-year full-time degree gives you hands-on experience in working with archaeological material and undertaking fieldwork, developing the practical skills that make archaeology a real-world discipline. Modules cover different periods of world, European and Irish and British archaeology, from human origins to modern times and heritage, reflecting the exceptional archaeological richness of the island of Ireland. Belfast's location provides direct access to some of the most significant and best-studied archaeological and palaeoenvironmental records in northern Europe, giving your fieldwork a distinctive depth. Graduates from Archaeology and Palaeoecology with Geography degrees go on to careers in heritage management, museum and gallery work, archaeological field units, environmental consultancy, landscape management and academic research. Others find roles in environmental assessment, planning consultancy, conservation organisations and natural heritage agencies. The analytical skills, fieldwork competence and scientific rigour the degree develops are valued in a growing range of contexts as environmental monitoring and heritage protection become more prominent policy concerns. Postgraduate study in archaeology, palaeoecology, environmental science or heritage studies is a common route for those wishing to develop specialist expertise.
