BA Arabic and Russian
About this course
Arabic and Russian is a degree that combines two of the most geopolitically and culturally significant languages in the world. Arabic is the official language of over twenty countries and the classical language of one of the world's great civilisations, opening access to a region whose politics, culture, religion, and history are of enormous global importance. Russian is spoken across the vast territory of the former Soviet Union, and is the language of a literary tradition that ranks among the greatest in the world, as well as of a state whose role in international affairs is of continuing significance. At the University of Leeds, this five-year full-time programme develops both languages to a high level of proficiency, with two years abroad built into the programme: one in an Arabic-speaking country and one in a Russian-speaking country. These immersive years give you first-hand experience of both cultures and societies, dramatically deepening your linguistic competence and your personal understanding of the worlds you are studying. You will engage with the histories, cultures, literatures, and contemporary societies of Arabic-speaking and Russian-speaking countries, developing genuine analytical and cultural depth in both. The typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the demanding dual language commitment of the degree. You will develop high-level proficiency in two major world languages, detailed cultural and historical knowledge of the regions where they are spoken, and the research and analytical skills that serious language study develops. Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy, intelligence, international journalism, international business, translation and interpreting, international organisations, academic research, and any role that benefits from expertise in these two strategically important languages. Postgraduate study in Arabic studies, Russian, or international relations is a natural continuation.
