MA Arabic and Russian and Spanish
About this course
Studying Arabic, Russian, and Spanish together is one of the most ambitious language combinations available, and the rationale for it is compelling. These three languages between them give access to the three most geopolitically significant linguistic worlds outside English: Arabic, the language of the Middle East, North Africa, and Islamic intellectual tradition; Russian, the language of one of the world's largest states and one of the UN's six official languages; and Spanish, spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Spain, Latin America, and the United States. A graduate fluent in all three alongside English possesses a genuinely exceptional range of cultural and communicative access. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad, which is an essential element of any serious language degree. The year abroad gives you sustained immersion in one or more of your target languages and cultures, accelerating linguistic development and deepening cultural understanding in ways that classroom study alone cannot achieve. You will develop your language skills across all three languages, engage with the literatures, histories, and cultures of the Arabic-speaking, Russian-speaking, and Spanish-speaking worlds, and build the intercultural communication competence that a three-language programme uniquely develops. You will develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in all three languages, alongside the critical and analytical abilities that language and cultural study at this level demands. Graduates with a three-language degree in Arabic, Russian, and Spanish are in an exceptional position in the graduate labour market. Diplomacy, international organisations, translation and interpreting, intelligence and security, international business, journalism, and academic research are all fields that value this combination. Postgraduate study in area studies, languages, international relations, or translation is a natural next step for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
