MA Arabic and Comparative Literature and Classical Studies
About this course
Arabic and Comparative Literature and Classical Studies is a combination that brings together one of the world's most important living languages with the comparative and historical study of literary traditions across cultures and time. Arabic opens access to the literature, scholarship, and political discourse of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as to the classical Islamic intellectual tradition that shaped medieval philosophy, science, and theology across three continents. Comparative literature examines literary works across languages, exploring what they share and how they differ, developing critical tools that work across cultural boundaries. Classical studies extends this comparative reach into the ancient Greek and Latin traditions that shaped so much of Western and Islamic thought. At the University of St Andrews, this five-year, full-time programme gives you the time to develop genuine depth in all the component disciplines. You will build Arabic from the foundations to an advanced level, engaging with both the classical language and its modern forms, while the comparative literature strand trains you in the analysis of literary texts across different linguistic and cultural traditions. Classical studies adds the ancient Greek and Latin dimensions, allowing you to explore the deep conversations between ancient Mediterranean, medieval Islamic, and modern literary cultures. St Andrews is one of the UK's leading universities for language and literature study, and its academic environment supports this kind of ambitious, wide-ranging scholarship. Graduates of this combination pursue careers in academic research, translation and interpretation, journalism, diplomacy, cultural organisations, publishing, and international development. The ability to work with literary and cultural material across multiple linguistic and historical traditions is rare and valued in any role that requires cross-cultural understanding and analytical precision. Many continue to postgraduate study in Arabic, comparative literature, classical studies, or translation, building specialist expertise for research or curatorial careers.
