BSc Applied Sports Studies - In Tennis
About this course
Applied sports studies with a specialisation in tennis is a degree designed for people who are serious about tennis, whether as a player competing at national or international level or as a coach with significant experience, and who want to develop that professional engagement through academic study. The degree applies sports science, coaching theory, and sports management knowledge to the specific context of tennis, asking how performance science, movement analysis, psychological skills, and coaching methodology apply to the demands of the sport at a high level. It recognises that elite sports practice and academic understanding can enrich one another, developing practitioners who think rigorously about their sport. At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your professional practice in tennis in an international context. The degree is designed specifically for those who are already engaged with tennis at a high level, either as competitors or coaches, and it builds on that experience by providing the theoretical frameworks and applied knowledge that make professional practice more effective and reflective. You will engage with sports science, coaching science, performance analysis, and the business and management dimensions of professional tennis, developing a more complete understanding of the sport and its professional ecosystem. Graduates of applied sports studies programmes with a tennis focus pursue careers in professional tennis coaching, player development, performance analysis, and the management of tennis clubs, academies, and national programmes. Many work within the national tennis infrastructure including the Lawn Tennis Association, county associations, and private clubs, while others build careers in high-performance environments supporting professional players and national teams. The broader sports science and coaching knowledge developed by the degree also transfers to roles in other racquet sports, sport development more broadly, and fitness and conditioning. Further professional qualifications through the LTA coaching pathway are a natural complement to the academic degree for those pursuing coaching careers.
