BSc Applied Mathematics
About this course
Applied mathematics is the branch of the discipline concerned with using mathematical tools and techniques to model, analyse and solve problems arising in the natural world, engineering, finance, biology and the physical sciences. While pure mathematics develops results for their intrinsic logical elegance, applied mathematics is driven by the question of how mathematical structures can illuminate real phenomena, from the behaviour of fluids and the spread of infectious diseases to the pricing of financial derivatives and the dynamics of climate systems. The discipline develops exceptional quantitative reasoning, modelling capability and the ability to work at the interface between mathematics and other fields. At the University of Aberdeen you will study applied mathematics over four years of full-time study, on a programme that provides a top-quality mathematical education within a thriving centre of mathematical teaching and research. A year abroad is built into the programme, allowing you to study at a partner institution and experience a different mathematical culture and approach. You will build from the foundational areas of calculus, linear algebra and analysis through to more specialist applied content, developing skills in mathematical modelling, numerical methods, differential equations and the specific mathematical techniques relevant to physical, biological and financial applications. The typical tariff of 168 reflects the mathematical rigour expected from those entering this programme. Applied mathematics graduates are among the most employable in the sciences. Careers span finance, actuarial science, data science, engineering, climate and meteorology, defence, operations research, medical research and academia. The mathematical modelling and problem-solving skills developed through applied mathematics are valued in any role where quantitative reasoning and the ability to work with complex, real-world systems is needed. Many graduates pursue doctoral research, either in applied mathematics itself or in the scientific disciplines to which it is applied. The four-year Scottish Honours degree provides a strong platform for postgraduate study and professional careers in analytically demanding fields.
