About this course

Anthropology is the discipline that takes the full range of human diversity, across cultures, societies, histories, and biological forms, as its subject matter. Social and cultural anthropology asks how different societies organise themselves, what values and belief systems sustain them, and what it means to encounter radically different ways of living and thinking. It is a discipline that cultivates genuine openness to difference, deep listening, and the ability to suspend easy assumptions about what is normal or natural. In a world of accelerating cultural contact and persistent misunderstanding, these capacities are among the most valuable that any degree can develop. At the University of Plymouth, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a structured introduction to academic study for students who need additional preparation before engaging with the full honours curriculum. The foundation year builds essential academic and organisational skills in the context of the subject area, supporting a confident transition to degree-level work. The main programme develops your understanding of ethnographic method, social organisation, kinship, religion, gender, political economy, and the history of anthropological thought, alongside the practical skills of fieldwork and cultural analysis. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all available, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience and to engage with other cultures and fieldwork contexts directly. Graduates of Anthropology programmes work across a very wide range of fields, including international development and humanitarian work, public health, education, community development, journalism, the civil service, market research, human resources, and the cultural and creative sectors. The skills in cross-cultural understanding, ethnographic observation, and analytical writing that anthropology develops are valued wherever genuine engagement with human diversity is required. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in anthropology, development studies, or related fields.
