BA Anthropology and Irish
About this course
Anthropology and Irish is an unusual and richly rewarding combination, joining a discipline that asks fundamental questions about what it means to be human with deep engagement with one of the oldest living languages in Europe and the culture it carries. Anthropology examines human cultural diversity, comparing societies and communities across the world to understand how people organise their lives, resolve conflicts, create meaning, and navigate the forces of change. Irish connects you to a linguistic tradition with roots stretching back over a thousand years, and to the contemporary communities, cultures, and identities that the language continues to sustain. At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year full-time degree combines intensive tuition in the Irish language and culture with the broader comparative framework of social and cultural anthropology. The language modules develop your competence in written and spoken Irish, covering syntax, phonetics, and semantics, while optional modules offer a broad range of perspectives on Irish culture, society, and identity, including film studies, Irish translation, modern poetry, linguistics, and the short story. The anthropology component gives you the theoretical and methodological tools to study human diversity, understand how conflict arises and how resolutions are sought, and place Irish society within a global comparative frame. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. Graduates of this programme are well placed for careers in education, heritage, cultural organisations, journalism, community development, public administration, and the cultural sector in Ireland and beyond. The combination of deep cultural knowledge, linguistic competence, and anthropological thinking is valued in any context that involves understanding people across cultural boundaries. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in anthropology, Irish studies, linguistics, or social work, and the degree provides a strong foundation for academic research in any of these areas.
