About this course

Animation is a discipline concerned with creating the illusion of movement and life through the sequential manipulation of images. It encompasses both traditional hand-drawn techniques and contemporary 3D digital production, and the principles that underlie good animation, including timing, weight, squash and stretch, anticipation, and follow-through, apply across both. Originally codified by Disney animators, these principles have been used by generations of practitioners across film, television, games, and advertising to create work that communicates with audiences through movement and character. At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme builds your skills from the foundations up, beginning with 2D animation using hand-drawn techniques and progressing to 3D animation using industry-standard software and methods. You will study the history of animation and motion design, developing your critical understanding of how the medium has evolved across its diverse styles and applications, from its earliest beginnings through to contemporary practice in film, television, games, and commercial work. The principles of animation are treated as fundamental: you will learn them thoroughly because they underpin everything else you do. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you professional experience in the industry before you graduate and making your portfolio stronger and more competitive. With a typical entry tariff of 104 UCAS points, the programme is accessible to students with creative ambition. Animation graduates work across film, television, games, advertising, digital media, and interactive design. Roles include character animator, 3D generalist, motion graphics designer, concept artist, visual effects artist, and storyboard artist. The industry is global and active, with work distributed across major studios, independent companies, and freelance practice. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine studio work with other creative activities. Postgraduate study in animation, visual effects, or related digital arts is available for those who wish to develop further.
