BSc Animal Management (Pet Behaviour and Welfare)
About this course
The study of animal management with a focus on pet behaviour and welfare addresses the growing understanding that companion animals have complex psychological and social needs, and that understanding those needs is central to their wellbeing and to the quality of the relationship between animals and the people who care for them. The field draws on ethology, learning theory, zoology, and welfare science to develop practical skills in understanding why animals behave as they do and how behaviour can be shaped, supported, or addressed when problems arise. At Anglia Ruskin University, this part-time programme allows you to combine study with other commitments, making it accessible to students who are working in animal-related fields or who need a flexible approach to higher education. The programme develops your knowledge of animal behaviour, learning, welfare assessment, and the ethical frameworks that underpin responsible animal care. You will study the science of how companion animals learn and communicate, how to assess welfare across different settings, and how to support pet owners and other carers in managing behaviour humanely and effectively. The part-time mode means you progress at a pace that accommodates other responsibilities while still building a solid academic and practical foundation in the subject. Graduates go on to work in pet behaviour consultancy, animal shelters, veterinary practice support, rescue organisations, boarding and daycare facilities, and animal welfare inspection. Many develop careers as accredited animal behaviour practitioners, working with individual pets and their owners to address problem behaviours or support enrichment and training. Further study in animal behaviour, veterinary nursing, or welfare science is a natural route for those who wish to deepen their expertise or pursue more specialist professional roles.
