BA Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic
About this course
Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic is one of the most unusual and intellectually rich undergraduate degrees available anywhere. It focuses on the medieval cultures of the British Isles and Scandinavia, examining the languages, literatures, histories, and material cultures of peoples who shaped the world we inhabit: the Anglo-Saxons who gave England its name and language, the Norse seafarers who reached from Scandinavia to Iceland, Greenland, and North America, and the Celtic-speaking communities of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. These are cultures that left extraordinary bodies of writing in Old English, Old Norse, Old Irish, Old Welsh, and Latin, and studying them means learning to read and interpret that writing in its original languages. At the University of Cambridge, this three-year full-time programme is taught by leading scholars in these fields, giving you access to original source materials and the chance to conduct your own research within a richly resourced academic environment. The typical entry tariff of 216 points reflects the demanding nature of the programme and the high academic standard expected. You will develop skills in medieval languages, textual analysis, historical interpretation, and the study of manuscript tradition and material culture, producing an unusually deep expertise in a period and set of cultures that are formative for the modern world but poorly understood by most educated people. Graduates develop exceptional skills in close reading, linguistic analysis, and historical reasoning that are valuable across many professional contexts. Career paths include academia, publishing, museum and archive work, heritage and conservation, librarianship, cultural policy, and teaching. Many graduates pursue postgraduate research, and the degree is an excellent preparation for doctoral study in medieval studies, English, Celtic studies, Scandinavian studies, or related humanities disciplines.
