BA Ancient History and History
About this course
Ancient History and History is a degree of unusual intellectual ambition, asking you to work across the full temporal range of the human past, from the city-states of classical antiquity to the transformations of the modern world. The two fields bring different kinds of evidence and different methodological challenges: ancient history requires you to work carefully with fragmentary sources, where the gaps in the record are as revealing as what survives, while modern history confronts you with an abundance of material that requires different skills of selection, synthesis, and interpretation. Studying both in the same degree develops a historical sensibility that is flexible and comparative. At the University of Manchester, this three-year full-time programme is taught within one of the UK's leading research universities, whose history and classics departments have considerable depth and international standing. You will engage with the political, social, cultural, and economic history of the ancient world alongside the major themes and debates of modern historical scholarship, developing skills in primary source analysis, historiographical argument, and the kind of critical thinking that sustained historical study demands. Manchester's research culture means the teaching you receive reflects current debates in both fields, and the university's library resources support serious independent research. The skills developed through this degree are among the most transferable in the humanities: the ability to evaluate complex evidence, construct well-reasoned arguments, and communicate clearly about material that resists simple summary. These are qualities that employers in law, the civil service, journalism, education, and many other fields consistently value. Graduates pursue careers in education, publishing, journalism, heritage and museums, law, the civil service, and arts administration. Many go on to postgraduate study in ancient history, classical studies, or modern history. The combination of temporal breadth and methodological rigour is a genuine intellectual asset.
