About this course

Agriculture is simultaneously one of the oldest and most urgently forward-looking of disciplines. Feeding a growing global population sustainably, adapting farming systems to a changing climate, protecting biodiversity and soil health, and navigating the shifting policy landscape that follows from the UK's changing relationship with European agricultural support: these are the challenges that modern agriculture must address, and they require scientists and practitioners who understand both the biological foundations and the economic, environmental, and political dimensions of food production. At Aberystwyth University, this four-year BSc covers all aspects of agriculture and agricultural production systems, developing a detailed understanding of the changing farming landscape. The course takes a genuinely integrated approach, combining crop and animal science, soil science, agricultural economics, and environmental management to give you the breadth that modern farming requires. A defining feature of this programme is an integrated year studying abroad, providing the opportunity to experience agriculture in a different national and climatic context, which deepens your understanding of how different farming systems work and how they face common global challenges in different ways. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. Graduates of agriculture programmes find careers in farm management, agricultural consultancy, agri-business, food production, rural land management, conservation, and agricultural policy. The UK's continuing evolution of post-Brexit agricultural support schemes means there is growing demand for graduates who understand both the science and the economics of sustainable farming. Many graduates also go into research and development roles in plant science, animal health, or agri-technology, while others pursue postgraduate study to deepen their expertise in areas such as agronomy, animal science, or environmental management.
