Aerospace engineering is the discipline of designing and developing aircraft, spacecraft, rockets and the systems that sustain flight and space operations. It brings together aerodynamics, structural engineering, propulsion, materials science and systems integration to address the extraordinary challenge of making machines that operate reliably in the most demanding physical environments imaginable. The aerospace industry underpins civilian aviation, defence, satellite communications, earth observation and the emerging market for commercial space activity, all of which require a steady supply of well-trained engineers. At Brunel University London this programme, which includes a foundation year, provides a hands-on education designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to meet the real-world needs of the global aerospace industry. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed before the main BEng begins, making the programme accessible to students who may not have studied certain subjects at A-level or who would benefit from a structured preparation before degree-level engineering content. You will then study aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, materials, avionics and systems engineering across the BEng years, developing both analytical depth and practical engineering capability through laboratory work, design projects and computational analysis. Graduates work in aerospace and defence companies, space agencies, aviation regulators, research organisations and across the supply chains that support these industries. Aircraft design, structural analysis, propulsion engineering, systems engineering and flight testing are among the professional roles that aerospace engineering graduates move into. Chartered engineer status, typically pursued through the Royal Aeronautical Society, is a standard professional aspiration, and Brunel's programme is designed to provide the academic foundation for that pathway. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in specialist aerospace disciplines or in broader engineering research areas.
