About this course
Acting is one of the oldest and most demanding of all the performing arts. It requires the ability to embody characters truthfully, to inhabit imagined circumstances with physical and emotional conviction, to respond spontaneously to fellow performers, and to sustain that truthfulness across repeated performances for an audience. Training for professional acting demands intensive practice, rigorous self-awareness, physical and vocal development, and engagement with a wide range of dramatic texts, styles and periods. At the University of Chichester this practical and performance-based programme is designed to turn natural talent into the disciplined craft of a professional actor, preparing you for careers in theatre, film, television, radio and voice work. You will develop your skills across the full range of acting disciplines, including voice and speech, physical technique, scene study, classical and contemporary text work, devised performance and screen acting. The programme runs full time over three years and is taught by practitioners with direct experience of the professional industry. You will develop the technical range, emotional intelligence and professional habits needed for a sustained acting career, alongside a portfolio of performance work and a growing understanding of the professional landscape in which you will work. The conservatoire-style approach emphasises intensive practice and real performance opportunities as central to your development. Graduates from acting programmes at Chichester pursue careers as professional actors in theatre, film, television, radio, voice-over and related performance contexts. Many also develop portfolio careers that combine performance with teaching, movement facilitation, corporate training, arts education and applied theatre work. Postgraduate study in acting, voice studies, directing or related performance fields is also available for those seeking further specialist development.
