BSc Accounting and Finance
About this course
Accounting and finance together provide the technical and analytical foundation for understanding how organisations manage their resources and how financial markets function. Accounting ensures that financial information is recorded, reported and used reliably to support decisions; finance examines how capital is allocated, how risk is managed and how assets are priced across markets. The University of Northumbria at Newcastle offers this combination as a two-year full-time programme that packs substantial professional and international experience into a compact degree. Alongside the academic content, the programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and a work placement, meaning you gain real professional exposure in accounting or finance settings as well as time studying in a different country, all within the duration of the degree. You will cover financial and management accounting, auditing, corporate finance, investment analysis, financial modelling, business law and the regulatory frameworks governing accounting and financial practice. The programme develops both technical competence and the professional judgement needed to apply it effectively in organisational settings. Graduates move into careers in accounting firms, corporate finance departments, banking, investment management, insurance, financial consultancy and the public sector. Many use the degree as a foundation for professional qualifications with bodies such as the ICAEW, the ACCA or the CIMA, and the professional experience gained during the placement makes that transition smoother and faster. The combination of accounting and finance expertise, international exposure and work placement experience gives graduates a strong platform in the graduate market. Further study at postgraduate level in accounting, finance or related fields is also an option for those who want to specialise or pursue research.
